Korean Church Officials Call for Peace Between North and South
Religious leaders present plan to turn 1953 armistice into permanent peace
Officials from the National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK) are traveling to Washington, DC to promote a plan for permanent peace between North and South Korea. A press conference open to the national and religious press will take place in which this controversial plan will be presented. Religious leaders from the US will join them in this call for peace.
The hostilities of the Korean War ended in July 1953 with the signing of an armistice still in effect today. Aside from this armistice, no permanent plan for peace has existed between North and South Korea.
From the NCCK: “The proposal, recommending a declaration of the end of the Korean War and the signing of a peace treaty, goes beyond the existing stance of NCCK, which simply encourages the signing of a peace agreement. In its preface it names South Korea, North Korea, China, and the United States as the signatories. The proposal states the purpose of the treaty as the establishment of lasting, sustainable peace in the Korean peninsula, based on the definite ending of the Korean War and on friendly, wholly cooperative relations among the concerned parties.”
